Before After ![]() Causes of Increased Energy Cost Is your dirty HVAC system raising your energy bill? It might be and in this months "Did You Know" section addresses some possile problem areas with your system and what you should do to keep it running in peak performance. Some of the common problem areas include: Dirty ductwork, airhandlers or air filters, leaking ducts, and a dirty air conditioner. Ducts and air handlers: Clean Ducts/Air Handlers can improve performance with better airflow and improved air quality. Air Filters: Dirty air filters can be an area of energy loss . Dirty air filters can cause your system to run overtime. The dirt build up can reduce airflow and this reduction in airflow can cause the system to run longer than necessary. The longer the system runs the higher the increase in energy use. A filter replacement every month is a recommended to increase efficiency. Leaking Ductwork: Another area of energy loss is leaking ductwork. Leaking ductwork can account for as much as 25% of lost energy in a homes cooling system. If you think you have a leaking ductwork you need to contact a qualified HVAC professional to repair the leaking duct. Air Conditioner: The last area of energy loss is your central air conditioner unit. Your central air conditioner is located outside of the home where it is exposed to the elements. This exposure can cause dirt and debris to accumualt and eventually clog the coils. Once the coils have been clogged it makes the system work harder and reduces the efficiency of your system overall. The system should be professionally cleaned because no system can operate properly and economically without regular maintenance.
