Raysco Inc.'s September Newsletter
Issue 2, Vol 9 09/01/2011
Hello Raysco Inc. Customers!
This is the Sept. Issue of our newsletter. Please have a Happy & safe Labor Day weekend. We are introducing a new, simpler format and I hope it adds to your enjoyment. This month our topic is Pet Damage/ Odor and how you can minimize the effects & prevent further damage. Our helpful tip will also relate to pets in the home- plus our monthly special. As always- do not hesitate to contact us via phone or email for any reason!
Topic of the Month: Pet Damage
When your pet has an accident it is best to clean up right away using a cotton towel or paper towels. Fold the towels thick and apply pressure to absorb the spot. Next rinse out the spot with vinegar and water; spray and blot. In an untreated spot as the urine dries it can start to migrate into the carpet padding and in some cases into the subfloor.
To prevent repeat offenses; it is best to treat carpeting with an odor inhibitor; and to prevent staining, we recommend applying a quality protectant.
If the problem is particularly severe, a full Pet Service may be required. Raysco would have to replace padding, seal the sub floor, replace tack strip, as well treat the front and back of carpeting to remove all of the odor generating proteins.
Raysco can also repair tears, rips and holes that are damaged via chewing or digging. We can patch, replace or spot dye if required. Please call us for your free estimate prior to replacement- We can work miracles!
Raysco Inc's Quote of the Month:
"Maturity is achieved when a person accepts life as full of tension; when he does not torment himself with childish guilt feelings, but avoids tragic adult sins; when he postpones immediate pleasures for the sake of long-term values.....Our generation must be inspired to search for that maturity which will manifest itself in the qualities of tenacity, dependability, co-operativeness and the inner drive to work and sacrifice for a nobler future of mankind." - Joshua L. Liebman
Fun Carpet Facts:
The warm comfort that carpet provides is not just your imagination. Unlike other types of flooring, carpet is a natural insulator, providing additional warmth in cold seasons and retaining cool air in the summer months.
The use of carpet in a wall-to-wall application actually increases the R-value, or insulation level, of the carpeted area, potentially saving homeowners like you utility costs while reducing energy use. The R-value (thermal resistance) measures how much a material resists the movement of heat through a ceiling, wall, or floor in a building. The higher the number, the more effective the insulation.
Recently, tests carried out at the Johns Manville Technical Center Thermal Labs, one of the most sophisticated laboratories of its kind in the world, confirm carpet and pad significantly increase R-value compared to other flooring materials. Results varied according to the carpet's construction, with heavier products generally providing higher R-value. Carpets were tested with and without cushion, and the combination maximized the R-value.

Service of the Month
Upholstery Cleaning
Why Clean?
There are several things you can do to extend the life of your upholstery. Rotate all loose cushions frequently to assure even wear. Vacuum dust and dirt from all fabric, cracks, and crevices. This will help to reduce grit that can cause abrasion. Protect upholstery from the sun. Ultraviolet light can cause deterioration. If your pet likes to curl up on the couch or chair, put down a towel or blanket, since body oils from animals rub off onto fabric and are very difficult to remove from upholstery. Use caution with clothing such as blue jeans. Fabric dyes can transfer onto upholstered furniture.
Choosing to apply fabric protection is the best possible way to protect your new upholstered furniture and keep it looking new. Treated upholstery will last longer and clean easier. Fabric protection treatment is a spray applied to all surfaces of the upholstered item. The application “wicks” into the fibers of the fabric creating a protective barrier against soil and stains. The fabric protection treatment we use has no smell, is non-allergenic and does not change the look or feel of the fabric. Fabric protection treatment has also been shown to provide a barrier against the dirt and dust particles that cause excess abrasand premature fabric wear.
All upholstered furniture will become soiled through regular use. Most spills and soil on fabric protection treated upholstery will clean easily and quickly, provided that the proper cleaning procedures are followed. A fabric protector is not an absolute impenetrable barrier and improper cleaning methods can damage both the fabric and the treatment. Follow these guidelines to properly clean your fabric protected upholstery.
Upholstery should be professionally cleaned when it begins to begins to slightly dull in appearance overall or on the arm rests alone. Do not attempt to clean large areas yourself as overwetting will likely occur, creating unsightly water rings that may not be able to be removed.
Did You Know?
While there are many companies that clean carpets, few specialize in upholstery cleaning. While the principles of removing soil remain the same, the approach and chemistry is vastly different. Improper chemistry in carpet cleaning may be not be immediately apparent, while the same problem in upholstery cleaning can alter the feel of the fabric and even change its color. While carpet is made of only a few different types of fibers, upholstery fabric can be woven into literally thousands of different combinations. Therefore, the importance of experience and training in proper upholstery cleaning can not be overestimated.

Service of The Month
Carpet Cleaning
Why Clean:
The biggest enemy of carpet is dirt. Soiled carpets wear out faster because foot traffic grinds dirt into fibers, causing them to fray. Then fibers unwind and mat together like dirty hair on a stray dog. The most effective defense against this kind of carpet wear is frequent cleaning. Carpets should be professionally cleaned at least once preferably, twice a year.
Whats Happening:
Soiling, accumulation of microscopic grit on the fibers combined with foot traffic scratches away your carpet's beauty. Like rubbing the fishing line with a piece of sandpaper, the surface no longer reflects light uniformly from the scratched fibers. This gives the carpet a dull and gray appearance. We can clean your carpet to remove the soils, but cannot restore the scratched fibers.
How to Maintain:
Carpet cleanliness can affect indoor air quality. Indoor air quality, a growing government and customer concern, is forcing contract cleaners to focus on health as well as appearance. When properly maintained, carpet can improve indoor air quality, acting as a filter to hold soil, debris, and other contaminants, and preventing them from becoming airborne. routine carpet maintenance includes controlling the spread of dirt with entry mats, vacuuming with proper filtration and micro filter bags, and immediate spot removal.
The Licensed & Certified Advantage
Everyone has had an experience with a sub-par service provider. There is no set criteria, be it an independent, franchise or single operator with a truck. Well intentioned as it may be, there are a lot of factors to take under consideration prior to allowing a carpet cleaner into your home or business. While training and certifications do not guarantee a satisfactory result, most of us would rather place our trust in someone who has invested in training classes to be up to date and knowledgable in the latest procedures and methods, as well as keeping current with the latest equipment. Also, there are insurance and bonding issues to consider- a single operator is most likely working under cost constraints and may not have adequate coverage if your flooring, furniture or even home is damaged. We all wish to save money where we can- but your home, business or rental property represents an investment for the future- you wouldn't trust your retirement plans to your local bank teller- why allow an under-insured, uncertified operator to possibly incur damage that can potentially cost you thousands? A few points to consider:
What kind of workmanship guarantee does the carpet cleaning service offer? Will they come back and re-clean any problem areas for free? Is there a money back refund policy in place?
What type of insurance do they carry? General liability insurance will cover slip and fall accidents due to wet carpet but generally not damage to the owner's possessions or even the item being cleaned. A separate endorsement many be needed for breakage or workmanship damages.
Are employees bonded and are they covered under a workman's compensation policy? A bond would pay if an employee steals something from the job site. Workman compensation covers an employee if he gets hurt on the job.
Is the actual cleaning work performed by the service company's employees or are they sub contracted to a independent carpet cleaner? The booking company has little if any control over the sub contractor entering your home. If a sub contractor breaks or steals something in your house you may have little recourse.
What training and certification does your company require? The certifying organization for the inspection, cleaning, and restoration industries is the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification, (IICRC).
Raysco Inc. is very proud of our reputation and the quality of our work. We have virtually limitless recommendations, and we strive for 110% customer satisfaction on EVERY service call. We are not going to be the cheapest bid- but do you really want your flooring entrusted to the lowest common denominator? Remember- Good Work ain't Cheap & Cheap Work ain't Good.

Topic of the Month: Proper Care of your Natural Stone Flooring
Stone flooring is an investment and one with a great return. It’s almost always guaranteed to add value to your home. Taking care of it isn’t hard, but knowledge is power.
It’s is it's Own Worst Enemy:
Sand, grit, and dirt can damage natural stone surfaces because they are abrasive. Use a vacuum on your floor if it’s textured. But avoid the beater bar. Those bristles are tough and might scratch your flooring. An old-fashioned dust mop works well, as does a broom. Wet mop as needed.
Be Proactive:
Walk-off mats or area rugs on either side of entrances from the outside will help collect dirt before it reaches your beautiful new floor. Choose a rug or mat with a non-slip surface. Damp mopping your natural stone floor will help keep it looking beautiful.
Wipe up spills immediately. Use a neutral floor cleaner for good-old fashioned mopping. Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks. Don’t use products that contain lemon juice, vinegar or other acids on marble, limestone, or travertine. Avoid abrasive cleaners or any ammonia-based cleaners. These products will dull the floor’s luster. Retail grout cleaners, scouring powders or bathroom tub and tile cleaners can mar the finish on your stone.
Never mix bleach and ammonia. The combination creates a toxic gas.
To remove algae or moss from your stone in outdoor pool, patio or hot tub areas, flush with clear water and use a mild bleach solution.
Sealing Your Stone:
Natural stone has been formed over millions of years but improper care can ruin nature’s beauty. Although we usually think of stone as “hard”, it is a porous material that can absorb spills and stains if left untreated. Sealing stone with a quality impregnating sealer will prevent most spills from damaging it. There are a wide variety of sealers available, so you need to allow the professionals at Raysco Inc. to select the correct one for your specific needs and natural stone type.

Announcement:
Announcing Raysco Inc's new referral program: Now whenever you refer a client to us and they book a service- you recieve a $10 credit for your personal residence. We are honored that you trust us enough to tell your friends about Raysco- and we take that responsibility very seriously.
_________________________________________________
Home Remedy:Your part in keeping your Stone beautiful!
Always clean your natural stone with neutral based cleaners recommended by professionals. Never use anything other than professional products. A microfiber mop (velcro attached) is the best for both wet and dry applications. Avoid dragging, dropping, or any sharp metal objects on natural stone. Keep walk-off mats by all sinks, laundry rooms, front entrances, etc. to soften damage in heavily used areas.
Try to have floors regularly maintained at least once a year. Your floors are made to last forever, however, if left unmaintained, your investment is unappreciated. Keep it clean and shiny! Remember, every natural stone surface has everyday wear and tear in every residential or commercial setting!

Topic of the Month: Steam Cleaning Vs Other Methods
Steam Cleaning:
This method is often called "Warm Water Extraction", "Hot Water Extraction" or "Steam Cleaning" and is the cleaning method nearly all carpet manufacturers and carpet fiber producers recommend.
This is the only cleaning method classified as "deep cleaning". All the others are considered "light surface cleaning" because they are incapable of removing soil deep in the pile. Also, all other methods leave large amounts of cleaning agent in the carpet after cleaning. The maintenance brochure published by the world's largest carpet manufacturer, Shaw Industries, recommends this method, because its own research indicates that it provides the best capability for cleaning.
This method is frequently called "steam" cleaning due to the fine spray of water used to force dirt out of the carpet which is sucked up by the vacuum slot immediately in front of the spray. Seldom is real live steam used, however. This process consists of spraying a solution of water and detergent into the carpet pile and recovering the water and soil with a powerful vacuum into a holding tank. This can be done from a truck-mounted unit outside the home with only the hose and floor tool brought inside, or by a portable, system brought into the home or office.
From a health standpoint, the truck-mounted system is preferred because the dirty air and humidity are exhausted outside rather than recirculated around the house. Additionally, truck-mounted systems usually are more powerful than portable units and do a much better cleaning job and get the carpet dry more quickly.
The choice of the proper cleaning system is extremely important. Some systems leave residues which promote re-soiling and defeat the whole purpose of cleaning. Some methods actually damage the carpet fibers and shorten the life of the carpet. Check with the carpet manufacturer for recommendations.
Carpet Cleaning Frequency:
If carpet is cleaned before it becomes too unsightly, the cleaning chore will be easier and more successful. Allowing the carpet to become overly soiled may result in irreversible damage. It is a common myth that cleaning the carpet before it is absolutely necessary will cause it to get dirty faster. This goes back to the days when the shampoo methods were the most common. Carpeting in a typical household should be professionally cleaned every 6 to 12 months depending upon the number of residents, amount and type of activity, and whether the carpet is light or dark color.
Professional Carpet Cleaning versus "Do-It-Yourself" Cleaning:
The maintenance brochure published by the world's largest carpet manufacturer, Shaw Industries, recommends professional carpet cleaning over "Do-It-Yourself" because of the potential problems that can occur from using rental equipment - such as yellowing, overwetting, fiber tip damage, severe resoiling, overuse of detergents, etc. Most rental units available do not adequately clean and may actually damage the carpet.
"Steam" vs "Dry Method- Bonnet Method"/ "Carbonated Cleaning"
This method is sometimes called "dry cleaning", which is a misnomer, since water is used. Bonnet Shampooing is simply an adaptation of hard floor spray buffing to carpets.
This method for carpet maintenance consists of the use of a rotary or oscillating brush adapted with a stiff brush or drive block designed to drive wet, damp or dry pads. The carpet can be sprayed with the cleaning solution and/or the pads can be soaked in the cleaning solution and squeezed lightly before placing the pad under the driving brush.
The maintenance brochure published by the world's largest carpet manufacturer, Shaw Industries, suggests not using this method, especially on cut pile, due to pile distortion and fiber damage. This method has very limited capability for soil removal and leaves much of the detergent in the pile since it employs no real extraction. As a result, rapid re-soiling often occurs. Another disadvantage is that the spinning bonnet may distort the fibers of cut pile carpet, fuzzing the pile and leaving distinct swirl marks.
Sometimes, carbonated water is used to (in theory) give better soil suspension and bring down the pH. Companies using this method frequently use "scare" tactics to convince consumers that extraction cleaning or steam cleaning will destroy the carpet.
Please check with your carpet manufacturer because many leading carpet mills recommend against this method of cleaning. In closing, Raysco Inc. chooses to offer truck mounted steam cleaning because we believe it is simply the best and most effective method for cleaning carpeting; as well as tile, etc. We also train and certify all of our technicians to IICRC standards.
Raysco Inc's Monthly Home Remedy:
Removing Blood from Upholstery and Carpet
* 1 Blot up as much of the blood as you can with a clean, white cloth (if the stain is fresh). Mix 1/4 tsp. gentle dishwashing liquid with 2 cups of cool water. Apply the soap mixture to upholstery that has the care label "W" and synthetic or wool carpet.
* 2 Blot up the soap mixture by pressing your hand on the clean cloth until all the moisture is absorbed. If the stain remains, mix 1/8 cup oxygenated stain remover with 2 cups cool water and reapply as you did in step 1. Blot up again.
* 3 Mist or apply clean, cool water to the stain and blot to remove any soap residue. Don't saturate the upholstery or carpet.
* 4 For upholstery that has an "S" label (dry cleaning solvent), apply a drycleaning solvent to the stain and blot up. Open a window or run a fan to ventilate the room.
*5 Call Raysco Inc. and set up an appointment to attempt to make certain this incident does not leave a permanent stain.

Service of The Month Tile and Grout Cleaning Cleaning, sealing and maintaining your tile, grout and stone can be a difficult task. It is nevertheless necessary to maintain the beauty, cleanliness, and sanitary state of your tile floors, showers, countertops and anywhere else you have tile and grout. There are different techniques for cleaning different types of tile and grout. Cleaning ceramic tile, cleaning porcelain tile, cleaning marble tile, cleaning travertine tile, and cleaning slate tile all take different techniques, cleaning solutions and processes. We utilize the latest and greatest procedures for the difficult task of cleaning your grout. Why Clean? Grout lines between tiles quickly become stained and discolored when they are in high traffic areas or damp areas such as the kitchen or bathroom. Tiles and grout in these areas are susceptible to mold and mildew, food and water stains. Tile grout is continuously exposed to dirt, soap scum, mold and mildew that cause stains and discoloration. Even when the tile is clean, discolored grout can cause an otherwise tidy area to look dirty. Regular care and maintenance are the best ways to clean grout and keep it clean. Rather than allowing dirt and stains to build-up, consistent cleaning makes an unpleasant job not so difficult. Whats Happening. As with any surface, tile & grout is porous and will “lock in” dirt and bacteria. Soon after, your floor can become a hazardous pool of bacteria and begin to have odor problems. The odor issues are caused by the bacteria feeding and growing on your floor. These symptoms can often be decreased dramatically by having your tile & grout cleaned regularly. Some other issues are yellowing of the tile’s surface (typically lighter colored tile) and darkening grout lines. Therefore, the clean-up process can become more expensive and costly. ![]() ![]() Did You Know? The use of ceramic tile can be traced back through history for more than 4000 years. That’s because man has always desired to produce living spaces that were beautiful, durable, and easy to maintain. Beautiful tile surfaces have been found in the oldest pyramids, the ruins of Babylon, and in the ruins of ancient Greek cities. Ceramic tile remains as popular as ever today as the floor of choice in public restrooms, schools, hospitals and numerous other applications. This ongoing popularity can be attributed to both the product’s durability and design versatility. Carpet Recycling 'Growing Like Crazy' in California: Ron Greitzer, LA Fibers
Carpet Recycler Says His Industry is “Growing Like Crazy” in California
~ Surge is due to state’s AB 2398 Carpet Recycling Law, says Carpet America Recovery Effort board member Ron Greitzer
In an interview on TalkFloor TV that aired on February 23, 2011, host Dave Foster interviewed Ron Greitzer, President of LA Fibers, and a member of the Carpet America Recovery Effort’s board of directors, on the influence California’s new carpet recycling law AB 2398 is having on carpet recycling activity in the state.California passed AB 2398 to increase landfill diversion and recycling of post-consumer carpet generated in California. The law requires all carpet manufacturers to add a stewardship assessment of $0.05/square yard onto all carpet sold in the state as of July 1, 2011.
Calling AB 2398, “A model program” that would work in any state, Greitzer said that, since the law’s passage last year, the number of carpet collectors in California has grown from one business to seven. “It’s growing like crazy,” Greitzer said, predicting that California would see diversion rates for carpet surge to 30% in a year.
He added that, “The most important thing about recycling is not just bringing the goods in - it’s converting them to useable products.” Greitzer’s company produces Reliance carpet cushion, a fiber carpet underlayment that is made with 100% post-consumer nylon 6,6 content.
Robert Reiss, Vice-President of Reliance Cushion, who also participated in the interview, said the exclusive use of nylon 6,6 made Reliance Cushion a superior product compared to other fiber cushions, in that nylon 6,6 offers excellent performance characteristics in terms of its resilience and durability. He added that Reliance cushion has passed multiple performance tests. Through a partnership with fiber producer INVISTA, the cushion carries the Stainmaster® brand.

Dear Valued Raysco Customer, Welcome to Raysco Inc's March issue of the newsletter. We will be explaining how allergy inducing materials are introduced into your home; and how to remove and prevent them from causing havoc for you and your family. Also be sure to check out this months special, we hope to be able to make your sping more enjoyable- affordably! Hope you enjoy and as always if you have any questions, suggestions, or comments please contact us by calling our office, email or through any of our social media outlets. Service of The Month Air Duct Cleaning ![]() ![]() What is Air Duct Cleaning? Most people are now aware that indoor air pollution is an issue of growing concern and increased visibility. Many companies are marketing products and services intended to improve the quality of your indoor air. You have probably seen an advertisement, received a coupon in the mail, or been approached directly by a company offering to clean your air ducts as a means of improving your home's indoor air quality. These services typically — but not always — range in cost from $450 to $1,000 per heating and cooling system, depending on the services offered, the size of the system to be cleaned, system accessibility, climatic region, and level of contamination. Duct cleaning generally refers to the cleaning of various heating and cooling system components of forced air systems, including the supply and return air ducts and registers, grilles and diffusers. If not properly installed, maintained, and operated, these components may become contaminated with particles of dust, pollen or other debris. If moisture is present, the potential for microbiological growth (e.g., mold) is increased and spores from such growth may be released into the home's living space. Some of these contaminants may cause allergic reactions or other symptoms in people if they are exposed to them. If you decide to have your heating and cooling system cleaned, it is important to make sure the service provider agrees to clean all components of the system and is qualified to do so. Failure to clean a component of a contaminated system can result in re-contamination of the entire system, thus negating any potential benefits. Methods of duct cleaning vary, although standards have been established by industry associations concerned with air duct cleaning. Typically, a service provider will use specialized tools to dislodge dirt and other debris in ducts, then vacuum them out with a high-powered vacuum cleaner. ![]() A Complete Home Solution Indoor air quality, a growing government and customer concern, is forcing contract cleaners and homeowners to focus on health as well as appearance. When properly maintained, your carpeting can improve indoor air quality, acting as a filter to hold soil, debris, and other contaminants and preventing them from becoming airborne, if used in conjunction with routine carpet maintenance; which includes controlling the spread of dirt with entry mats, regular vacuuming with proper filtration and micro filter bags. A floor care regimen on a standard schedule will complete a comphrehensive plan to decrease allergen contamination. Fun Carpet Facts: The warm comfort that carpet provides is not just your imagination. Carpet Wrinkles- don't panic!
Carpet Wrinkles ~ Why & What to Do
In the world of real estate, carpet is something that most home owners have in one way or another. Having carpet installed or cleaned is something that most of us do at some point in home ownership. The past two years it seems as though there was more stretched carpet (wrinkles) in homes for sale than in the past. There are multiple opinions as to what causes carpet to wrinkle including bad installation and/or cleaning. There is another theory that carpet is not as good as it use to be. Newer carpets, when cleaned, start to stretch sooner than older carpets do.In this post the theories are not dissected as much as options for what you can do to avoid or fix carpet wrinkles in your house. It may not be replacing an entire room or house.
Just in case you have carpet that has stretched, or in another word, wrinkled, be assured you are not alone.
Three great recommendations for carpet issues are:
- Have carpet fixes repaired before you get your carpet cleaned and
- Get recommendations from friends and/or professionals you respect before hiring a company
- Get a firm bid before hiring anyone

Las Vegas Real Estate values at 1999 levels
Las Vegas home prices tumble to 1999 levels, report says
Las Vegas-area home prices fell again in December to levels last seen in 1999, according to the widely-watched Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller Home Price Indices.
With the local market burdened by foreclosures and high unemployment (14.5 percent), Las Vegas-area prices have now declined three consecutive months based on Standard & Poor's data.
Las Vegas prices fell 1.1 percent from November to December and were down .6 percent on a seasonally-adjusted basis. These compare to declines of 1 percent and .4 percent, respectively, for the 20 big U.S. cities tracked in the Standard & Poor's report.
Compared to December 2009, Las Vegas prices were down 4.7 percent vs. the 2.4 percent year-to-year 20-city decline.
"Despite improvements in the overall economy, housing continues to drift lower and weaker." David Blitzer, chairman of the Index Committee at Standard & Poor's, said in a statement. "Unlike the 2006 to 2009 period when all cities saw prices move together, we see some differing stories around the country.
"California is doing better with gains from their low points in Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. At the other end is the Sun Belt – Las Vegas, Miami, Phoenix and Tampa. All four made new (index) lows in December," he said.
"Cleveland and Las Vegas have the dubious distinction of average home prices now below their January 2000 levels. Detroit was the only market that was in that group prior to December," Blitzer said.
Standard & Poor's data show Las Vegas home prices through December had fallen 58 percent since their peak in April 2006.
The Standard & Poor's report is expressed in index values rather than dollars and is based on a three-month moving average of prices in the markets it tracks.
The December index value for Las Vegas, 98.91, is the lowest since 98.99 recorded in October 1999.
In terms of actual dollars, the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors reported that the median single-family home price during January locally was $125,000, down 5.3 percent from December and down 7.4 percent from January 2010.

Whos packing your parachute?
This Blog is a reprint of a Facebook post by Michael Donovan of Windermere Realty.
Charles Plum, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, was a jet fighter pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions, his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected & parachuted into enemy hands.
He was captured & spent six years in a Communist prison. He survived that ordeal & now lectures about lessons learned from that experience.
One day, when Plumb & his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table came up & said, “You’re Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!”
“How in the world did you know that?” asked Plumb.
“I packed your parachute,” the man replied.
Plumb gasped in surprise & gratitude. The man pumped his hand & said, “I guess it worked!”
Plumb assured him, “It sure did – if your parachute hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.”
Plumb couldn’t sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plumb says, ‘I kept wondering what he might have looked like in a Navy uniform – a Dixie cup hat, a bib in the back, and bell bottom trousers. I wondered how many times I might have passed him on the Kitty Hawk. I wondered how many times I might have seen him & not even said good morning, how are you or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot & he was just a sailor.’
Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor had spent on a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship carefully weaving the shrouds & folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn’t know.
Now, Plumb asks his audience, ‘Who’s packing your parachute?’
Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day.
Plumb also points out that he needed many kinds of parachutes when his plane was shot down over enemy territory-he needed his physical parachute, his mental parachute, his emotional parachute, & his spiritual parachute.”
He called on all these supports before reaching safety. His experience reminds us all to prepare ourselves to weather whatever storms lie ahead.

The Carpet Cleaning Industry to be Regulated?
The Carpet Cleaning Industry is on the Road to Regulation!
As you may know, the carpet cleaning industry is unregulated. Individuals can simply purchase equipment and operate as carpet cleaners without ANY formal training or being required to meet any standard. Well-intentioned but uninformed people in our industry, attaining mediocre cleaning outcomes, has resulted in the carpet cleaning industry being viewed negatively by the public at large.
Are you ready for the change?
As you know, the carpet cleaning industry is unregulated. Individuals can simply purchase equipment and operate as carpet cleaners without formal training or being required to meet any standard.
Well-intentioned but uninformed people in our industry, attaining mediocre cleaning outcomes, has resulted in the carpet cleaning industry being viewed negatively by the public at large. Being driven by price rather than quality has made it difficult for operators to survive.
According to research, it seems only 12% of home owners in NV choose to have their carpets cleaned on a regular basis due to this negative view.
Wouldn't it make sense for technicians to require licensing, since they are working on a very expensive component of your home, operating machinery in your home, and exposing themselves and you to insurance obilgations and risks? Maybe we should take up this matter with the Clark County Licensing Board, they certainly never pass up any opportunity to collect monies.
Would you feel better if you knew the individuals being invited into your home had been screened, licensed and bonded? Then ALL carpet cleaners would be conforming to Raysco Inc, standards.

Carpet Stain Control
Carpet Cleaning

Proper care of your floor prevents damage, extends its life and keeps it looking new for years. How do you properly care for your flooring?
If you enjoy going barefoot, or even if you don't, kick your shoes off at the door. Why remove your shoes? If you have a rough board that needs smoothing, you grab a sheet of sandpaper for the job. Guess what's on the bottom of your shoes? Sand and dirt grind away at the fibers in your carpet, leading to an early death.
Take a closer look at the bottoms of those shoes and you'll find oil, dirt and heaven only knows how many bits of leftover dog deposits. Small wonder why your carpet stubbornly refuses to come clean. Do wear slippers or socks inside. The oil from the bottom of your feet also dirties the carpet.
Vacuum your carpet regularly, and do not use liquid carpet shampoos to clean them. Ever wash your hair and forget to rinse out all the shampoo? The same thing happens to your carpet. The shampoo can't be completely rinsed out, leaving a sticky residue. That residue acts like a big magnet pulling the dirt from the bottom of your shoes. Now you have clean shoes and even dirtier carpets. Use dry carpet cleaners instead. Stores selling vacuum cleaners carry dry carpet cleaners.
Getting out old shampoo becomes the trick. Rent a shampoo machine that cleans with water. Mix 1 cup vinegar per 2 ½ gallons of water and clean according to directions. Go back over the carpet with warm water only. The vinegar pulls out the old shampoo, cleaning the carpet as well. It may take a time or two, but your carpets will be soft and free from grime. The hot water reactivates the shampoo already in the carpet, providing the needed cleansing action.
Stains in carpet can be a hassle to remove. Never rub a stain, just blot. Rubbing breaks down the fibers and spreads the stain. Remove most food stains with shaving cream. Spray on and resist the temptation to rub it in, then let it set for 15 minutes. Rinse with a vinegar and water solution.
Club soda generally removes red wine stains. Remove red dye stains (found in drink mixes, Popsicles, dog and cat food) with a 30/70 solution of peroxide to water. Remember, peroxide is bleach, so test an inconspicuous spot first for color fastness. Apply the mixture, wait 30 minutes, then remove as much moisture as possible and rinse with a vinegar/water solution. If the stain remains, add a bit more peroxide to the mixture and retreat.
Brake cleaner also does a good quick job of removing most food stains. Dab a little on a clean cloth and gently blot the stain. Rinse with soap and water. Brake cleaner contains the same chemical professional dry cleaners use to clean stains in clothing. Do not pour brake cleaner directly into the carpet. It could dissolve the adhesive holding the fibers in the carpet.
Oops, the dog had an accident and the stain and smell refuse all attempts at removal. First try an enzyme product. Pour on enough to saturate to the pad and treat an area twice as large as the stain. Urine hits the pad and spreads. Let it set a couple of hours. You'll find enzyme products at pet stores, RV or marine stores. They are used in the holding tanks to dissolve solid material.
Should that not remove all the stain or odor, baking soda and peroxide remain your best hope. Mix a 30/70 solution of peroxide to water adding 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda per cup of mixture. Yes, it bubbles and fizzles, but not before removing the stain and smell. Always test a spot first for colorfastness. Peroxide is bleach and may discolor the carpet. Blot up what you can with an old towel and rinse well with 1/3 cup vinegar per quart of water.
If you see red spots on your carpet where your pet just lost its lunch, switch food to a neutral colored food. The red dye in pet food is the culprit behind those spots. Dogs and cats are colorblind, so they can't tell the difference. Again, use the 30/70 peroxide and water combination for removal.
Oil, grease, magic marker and ink can be the dickens to remove. Most janitorial companies or department stores carry a product called DeSolvit. WD40 or Orange Clean also work wonders at removing these stubborn stains. Rubbing alcohol removes ink. Blot on, allow to set 30 minutes and blot to remove. Rinse with sudsy water. Magic marker is generally permanent and you may not be able to remove it.
Gum - Freeze gum with ice cubes and chip off what you can with the blunt side of a kitchen knife. DeSolveit removes the rest.
Wax - Freeze with ice and chip off what you can with the blunt side of a knife. Wax needs heat for removal. Some of the newer carpets are quite sensitive to heat and scorch easily, so test an out of the way spot first. You can also use a hair dryer set to the hottest setting.
Set your iron to a low to medium heat. The less heat you use, the less chance of scorching your carpet. Take a white paper towel or paper bag with no writing on it (the dye will transfer to the carpet) Put the towel down on top of the wax and iron the towel for no longer than two seconds. Move the towel and redo if necessary. Generally once is enough.
